HTS Plays Key Role in Construction and Patient Move at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Moves 197 Patients Into New Pavilion, HTS Celebrates Successful Collaboration

Los Angeles, CA, July 17, 2011 – HTS celebrated the culmination of more than two years of close collaboration as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) moved into a brand new patient care pavilion on Sunday. Through careful planning, dedication, and attention to detail, CHLA opened the Marion & John E. Anderson Pavilion to patients and families with enormous success.

Collaboration between HTS and CHLA began in 2009 with the launch of HTS’ FreightTrain® Construction Management
Software. The construction project team used tablet PCs to manage the resolution of more than 38,000 issues throughout the 46,000 square foot facility, making sure that each room was built exactly as it was planned – a critical element in a hospital designed specifically to treat children. The new seven-story facility is family-care focused, providing private rooms equipped with a pullout bed, workspace, WiFi, and webcam, all of which enable the close contact needed between parent and child.

With construction nearly complete, HTS worked closely with the hospital team to begin the immense task of creating a transition plan for CHLA to move into and operate within a new facility that will treat more than 93,000 children each year. HTS and CHLA developed and tested the critical tasks, procedures, operational workflows, and patient move sequences necessary for a successful move. The ultimate test was a series of three ‘Day in the Life’ events, where HTS led up to 500 executives, staff, volunteers, and guests through all day simulations of patient moves and new facility operations. With some of the most critical and complex patient cases in the world, it is no wonder that CHLA chose to actively engage so many in these vital exercises.

“The success of a new hospital relies heavily on the ability of its staff to operate efficiently from day one,” said Becky Sales, HTS lead project manager. “Throughout this project we saw participation that demonstrates not only CHLA’s commitment to preparedness, but also the increasing importance hospitals place on the HTS transition plan.”

Move day was incredibly successful as 197 patients, many of which rely on life-saving equipment, were transported to the new state of the art facility in just over eight hours without issue. HTS helped man the command center, deploying hospital staff to receive and ensure that the patients were ferried according to schedule. Both HTS and families alike proudly observed as CHLA and their patients moved into the future of children’s health.

“CHLA prides itself on providing the highest quality care to our patients,” said Mary Dee Hacker, vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer. “HTS approached this project with the same high standard, and delivered excellence at every stage.”

The Marion & John E. Anderson Pavilion at CHLA is now open. It has 317 beds, a state-of-the-art trauma unit, and arguably the best-equipped pediatric emergency department in the western US.
